Britain, France and Israel then colluded to invade Egypt and retake the canal. Militarily this went well, but politically the crisis cost the allied powers far too much and so they withdrew in what was frankly a humiliating climbdown. Also it's the point in which Britain was officially no longer a superpower. So pretty important. Recommended books: The Arabs: A History by Eugene Rogan. A fantastic book that covers Arabic history from the Mamluk Sultanate to the modern day. Extremely detailed and pretty ambitious, too although be aware the author makes no attempt to hide their political biases. Postwar: A History of Europe since 1945 by Tony Judt. Obviously this book only really tackles Suez from the perspective of the Europeans but does a great job in doing so. THE book for Cold War Europe.
