What to say at your job interview (all my BEST phrases and tips!)

Published on Fri, 7 Jun 2019 16:36:41

All my best advice on what to say at your job interview. I will tell you how to answer the most common job interview questions. I’ll give you the grammatical structures to use when answering questions about your work experience, and also share with you vocabulary and phrases that will impress your interviewer. I recommend you prepare for your job interview by learning phrases you can repeat in your interview and also by practising your answers to these common questions. Get a friend to ask you the questions and make sure that you answer them in English! You can follow my advice about how to answer job interview questions whether you are looking for a job in an English-speaking country or you are being interviewed in English for a job in your home country. Good luck with your interview – I wish you success! If you want more help, watch my video on how to write your CV. Remember: there is no 'try'! Once you've finished the lesson, take the quiz here: http:/www.engvid.com/what-to-say-at-your-job-interview TRANSCRIPT Hi, everyone. I'm Jade. What we're talking about today is job interview English. So, in this lesson, I'm going to give you some phrases that you can use in a job interview, and I'll also be giving you... We'll also be looking at what grammar you should be using to answer common job interview questions. So I'm going to break it down so you know what to expect when you have that job interview in English, maybe for the first time, or maybe you've already had a couple of interviews in English but you just want to improve your performance. So let's start by talking about before the interview. So when you get there, there's always, like, that bit of small talk. Maybe you find it awkward, maybe you're a pro at small talk, but I thought I'd just give you some phrases so that you've got something to say, at least. So, when you get there, it's polite to say something like: "Thanks for inviting me to interview." If you feel like initiating small talk, you could say something like: "Is the position based in this office?" or "building", wherever you are. You might also want to say: "Oh, how many people work here?" Just sort of general things, nothing personal going on there. Or you might make an observation about what you see about the building or the workplace. You could say: "The offices are impressive." Now, clearly, if the building isn't very nice, and there isn't anything remarkable about it, then I probably wouldn't say something like this. It's better to make no observation than say one that's not true, or one that sounds a bit strange because the place is a real dump. You don't want to say it's great in your phrase. But maybe the area's nice, so then you could say: "What a great location!" This is an exclamation. You say it with some kind of enthusiasm. Or you might say, as you're walking to the interview room: "Ah, I see you have an open plan office." That means where everybody works together in the same room. Or you might say: "I see you have a staff canteen." That's where you get your food. Okay? So, all suggestions for general small talk. The interviewer may, however, initiate small talk with you, in which case, general things they like to talk about in England... Our... Our favourite topics of small talk are the weather, so you could say something like: "It's chilly today." That means it's a bit cold. Or mild. "Mild" is... "Mild" is when the weather is better than you would expect for that time of year. So if it's winter and it's mild, it's not as cold as you would expect it to be. Yep. So we love to talk about the weather, you know that about British people. Did you also know we like to talk about the traffic or the tube delays and things like that? So, perhaps they'll say: "How was the traffic? How was your journey here?" You can tell them about your journey. Say: -"Oh, it wasn't bad." -"How was your journey?" -"Not bad." That means it was okay. Or you could say: "It didn't take me too long." It didn't take me too long. Now, just a tip: You don't want to say: "It was a nightmare; it took me hours", because they'll probably want to employ someone who can get to the job easily.

How to succeed in your JOB INTERVIEW: Behavioral Questions

Published on Fri, 7 Jun 2019 16:36:40

Think about your last job interview. What did you do to prepare for it, and how did it go? Job interviews are difficult whether you are an English learner or a native speaker. If you want to get the job, you need to prepare for the job interview. In many English-speaking countries, interviews often include behavioral questions. In this lesson, I will teach you about behavioral interview questions and how to answer them. This video also has a listening practice portion to train you to recognize these questions, as well as tips on how to prepare for them. Try our quiz at the end to practice what you have learned, nail that interview, and get that job! Then work like a dog for the rest of your life :) Take the quiz: https://www.engvid.com/job-interview-behavioral-questions/ TRANSCRIPT Hello. My name is Emma, and in today's video I am going to teach you how to do really well on your interview. So, if you're looking for a job and you have an interview coming up, I'm going to talk to you about a type of question you might hear during your interview. I'm going to tell you how to recognize this type of question, and how to answer this type of question, along with many tips that can help you. Okay? So if you're about to do an interview, don't stress out - we can do it. All right, so let's look at the types of questions we're going to talk about today. Today we're talking about behavioural interview questions. Okay? So let's look at some examples to understand what I mean by "behavioural interview questions". Okay, so we have this question: "Tell me about a time when you worked effectively under pressure." So take a moment to think about that question. "Give an example of how you worked on a team.", "Describe a time when you had to deal with a very upset customer.", "Have you ever made a mistake? How did you handle it?" Okay, so when we're talking about behavioural questions, it's important to think about: What is being asked of you? Okay? So, the main thing with these types of questions is this word here: "Give an example". Behavioural questions... behavioural interview questions require that you give an example of how you have dealt with or handled a situation. So, my next question to you is: Do you think we're talking about an example of the past, something that's happened; the present; or the future, something that could happen? So look at these questions. Are we talking about a past example, a present example, or a future example? If you said: "Past example", you are correct. When we talk about behavioural interview questions, what the interviewer is asking is they want you to give a past example. Okay? Something you have done in the past. How can you recognize these types of questions? Because there are many different interview types of questions, these are just one type, so how do you know if it's behavioural interview question? That's a very good question. One way to know is by looking for key words. Okay? So, a lot of the times behavioural questions start off with some sort of hint or clue. "Tell me about a time" is an example. Okay? "Tell me about a time when you worked effectively under pressure.", "Tell me about a time when you disagreed with your boss.", "Tell me about a time when you had problems with your co-workers." Okay? So lot of the times you will hear: "Tell me about" or "Tell me about a time", and that's a signal: Okay, this is probably a behavioural interview question. You might have this as a starter to the question, they might ask you: "Give me an example of how you worked on a team." or "Give me an example of a time when you showed leadership." Okay? So those would both be behavioural questions. Again: "Describe a time". A lot of the times you'll hear the word: "a time" or "an example". So this is another common phrase you will hear with behavioural interview questions. You might also have a question like this: "Have you ever made a mistake?", "Have you ever had difficulties working with somebody?", "Have you ever had a conflict with a customer?", "How did you handle it? What did you do?" So these types of questions, they don't have the same key words as the ones above, but usually they're written or they're said with the present perfect tense, and usually you'll hear a second follow-up question: "How did you handle it?" Okay? So, key word here: "did". If you hear the past tense in the question, then they probably want you to answer the question using a past example. Okay? So, this might be a little bit confusing, you might be a bit worried, you know: "Oh, these questions seem really hard." Well, the very first step is recognizing these questions, so that's what we're going to do right now. We are going to practice recognizing behavioural interview questions. Okay, so now we are going to practice identifying behavioural interview questions. Okay? […]

English Speaking Practice | How to improve your English Speaking and Fluency: SHADOWING

Published on Sun, 17 Jun 2018 16:27:44

English Speaking Practice: How to improve your English Speaking and Fluency: SHADOWING More on the blog ▶︎ https://doeng.co/2qz8kdo Books I wrote ▶︎ https://doeng.co/2H78sMc League EES: http://doingenglish.com/membership What is shadowing? I define it as 'training for English fluency'. shadowing is a good way to improve your pronunciation, accent and speaking as well as rhythm. It gets your mouth moving, and your ears paying attention to English. Regardless of whether it's the best way to improve English speaking or not, to get good at speaking English you're going to have to do some hard work. And shadowing is no different. People often come to me asking how can I improve spoken English? Do I need people around me to practise? The answer is no. This lesson is going to show you how to learn to speak English NOW, even if you don't have anybody to speak with. Understand that speaking has to be learnt physically. It is important to get a lot of English speaking practice. Actually, speak English. Actually, move your mouth. If you don't move your mouth when you learn, pronunciation will be hard. Which means speaking will be hard. There is a problem ... If you don't live in an English speaking country, you'd probably say ... "But this isn't an English speaking country -- how can I get a lot of English speaking practice?' I don't mean "English conversation practice". I mean the same type of practice that gets you good at riding a bike. Raw, repetitive practice. English speaking practice. Training your mouth to speak English easily, and fluently. English speaking practice is much easier than you probably think. You don't need other people to practice your English speaking skills. Just use your listening materials! The important part is the CD, but the book also has an important use. A summary of the shadowing technique I describe in the video: - Listen to the book as many times as you can. - Read the book and check any words you don't know in your dictionary. - Listen to the book again. - Listen and read (out loud!) the book together. Practice section by section until you get really good at it. - Shadow the CD without the book. It's a really good idea to record yourself doing this too, so you can tell where you're making pronunciation mistakes. By the way, "Practise" is the British spelling of "practice". Check this video lesson: "Are you in the practice of practising English every day? 'Practice and Practise'" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5XymPOziqQ

Get Fluent With 1 Trick - Become A Confident English Speaker With This Simple Practice Trick

Published on Sun, 17 Jun 2018 16:27:44

Start speaking fluent English confidently - http://www.bit.ly/2gupuGO Did you know that there’s just 1 simple trick to becoming a fluent English speaker? Just 1 thing you must change about the way you learn to… Have your words came out naturally and automatically – without hesitation – as if English were your first language, every time you speak… Express your exact thoughts spontaneously, continuously and in detail, without being forced to change what you want to say – or only speak in simple sentences – because you can’t find the right words… Understand everything you hear in English movies, TV shows, music and conversations, and finally speak confidently – without ever feeling nervous or worried about mistakes – with the smooth pronunciation of a native speaker… And best of all, this 1 easy change in the way you learn will help you experience immediate improvement in your spoken English so you’ll finally be certain that you’re learning the right way. But before I reveal this trick, I’d like you to know why so many English learners have problems with their English and struggle to become fluent Speakers… Why do so many English learners often use words that sound unnatural in conversations? What’s the reason they often have to think about what grammar rules to use before speaking? What stops them from speaking smoothly and clearly? The answer to all of these questions is, in 3 words… How They Learn You see, traditional language learning methods only give English learners part of the fluency puzzle… Lessons teach them grammar rules, but not how to use grammar without thinking when they speak. Students learn English through their own language, so they’re trained to hesitate and translate in their heads during conversations. They learn to read and write the formal English of textbooks, but get very little training listening to – and speaking – casual, conversational, spoken English. So, what is the 1 simple trick to becoming a successful English speaker? It’s to learn English like native speakers. Fluency is nothing more than a collection of habits, like using grammar without thinking, or pronouncing words correctly. So, all you need to do to develop the same habits native speakers have is to learn the same way native speakers learn… When you learn English like native speakers, you master grammar automatically – without grammar tables and boring drills – through visual examples and stories. Building fluency like a native speaker means you also learn slang, idioms, phrasal verbs and other conversational, spoken English expressions, in addition to what’s appropriate for writing. Learning English the native way means you learn to speak fluent English naturally, actually practicing with native English speakers and building speaking confidence in the real world. When you learn this way, it’s easy, fun, fast and doesn’t feel like studying at all, just like how you learned your own native language… Now that you know that you must change the way you learn if you want to get fluent – because the traditional methods you’ve been using until now have not helped you become a confident speaker – how can you start developing the habits of a native English speaker so you can start speaking fluent English confidently? With EnglishAnyone.com's English Fluency Training Video Course: Master English Conversation 2.0. Master English Conversation 2.0 was designed by learners for learners with everything you need to finally… Master even complicated grammar points without confusing grammar tables or boring drills so you can use grammar without hesitation when you speak… Understand everything native speakers say and build a vocabulary of real, conversational words and expressions to start speaking naturally and correctly… Improve your pronunciation and sound like a native speaker… Develop the habit of speaking and responding spontaneously in real situations… Overcome shyness, meet native English speakers online and in the real world to practice speaking with, and build speaking confidence… Click on the link below to begin getting fluent the simple, easy way, just like native speakers, with a 100% guaranteed English conversation and fluency course – including 5 valuable, exclusive bonuses to help you get fluent even faster – available now for over 60% off. 3 tips for sounding like a native speaker

Published on Sun, 17 Jun 2018 16:27:44

"That'll be 66 cents please." "Sikysi... what?" Having a hard time understanding native speed English? This lesson will give you some tips on how to sound like a native speaker as well as how to understand what you hear by breaking down expressions into their individual word and sounds. https://www.engvid.com/3-tips-for-sounding-like-a-native-speaker/ TRANSCRIPT Hi again, welcome back to www.engvid.com. I'm Adam. Today, I'm going to help you sound a little bit more like a native speaker, hopefully. Students ask me all the time: "How can I sound like a native speaker?" Well, before I say anything, let me just tell you that it will take time and a lot, a lot, a lot of practice. The best way is to live in an English-speaking country, of course, but of course you can do it anywhere, but it takes time; be patient, practice, practice, practice. So we're looking at pronunciation. Let me start with this word: "pronunciation". Not: "pronounciation". It is not a pronoun. A pronoun is: "I", "me", "my", "mine". Pronunciation is how we speak English. So I'm going to give you three tips that will help you sound a little bit more like a native speaker. We're going to start with connecting words. Now, think about your own language, whether you're speaking Spanish or Polish or Chinese, you do this in your language as well. When you're speaking fast, you're taking words and you're squeezing them together; you're connecting them, so one word flows into the next word. That's what we're going to do here. You can connect consonants to consonants. What this means: when a word ends in a consonant... A consonant is "b", "c", "d", "f", "g", etc. A vowel is "a", "e", "i", "o", "u". When a word ends in a consonant and the next word begins with the same consonant, drop the first one. So for example: we do not say: "black coffee", we don't say: "ke, ke". There's only one "k": "bla coffee", "bla coffee." Okay? Practice that. Now, "t" and "d", these are two different consonants, but according to the tongue and the mouth, they almost sound the same so we do the same thing. "Wha do you do?", "Wha do you do?" But again, another thing you have to keep in mind is when we say it fast, we also don't really say "e", we say like a... Sort of like a small... We don't say "o" - sorry -, we say sort of a small "e". "Wha do ye do?" Practice that. "Wha do ye do?" Strange, huh? No "t", "wha", "de ye do?", "Wha de ye do?" That's how a native speaker would say it naturally. Now, another thing is when a word ends in a consonant and the next word begins in a vowel, make sure you roll it in. Right? Roll the consonant into the vowel and separate the syllable before. A syllable is the vowel sounds in a word. Okay? So nobody, like native speakers don't say: "Not at all. Oh no, not at all." We don't say it like that. We say: "Oh, not-at-all.", "Not-at-all.", "Not-at-all." Right? The "t", so this becomes: "No-ta-tall", "No-ta-tall", "Not at all". Okay? Say it quickly, blend the letters one into the next. But again, practice it. Now, for those of you who are going to be taking a test, an English test that involves listening; IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC, if you're in Canada you're maybe doing a CELPIP test. Okay? This is going to help you on the listening section as well. This is one of the things they're testing. Somebody on the recording will say: "Not-at-all", and you need to cut: "Not at all", you need to understand the separate words, that's part of the test. So practice speaking it, practice listening to it. Another thing we do is we squeeze some words. Okay? Certain words, we don't say all the syllables, we don't even say all the letters. I've heard many students say: "Com-fort-able", "com-fort-able", but native speakers, we don't say this part, we don't say the "or". We say: "Comf-ta-bil", and notice the last sound is like a small tiny, tiny little "i" in there. "Comftabil", "comf-ta-bil", "comftabil". Okay? We don't pronounce the "or": "Comfortable". Nope, don't do that. Another word like that: "Interesting". "In-chre-sting". Find out what the syllables are so: "In-ter" - sorry, my mistake -, "In-ter-rest-ing". If you want to emphasize something, we have a word called: "enunciate". When someone wants to emphasize a word, then they enunciate each syllable; they say each syllable separately. "Oh, that is very in-ter-est-ing." Right? Because I want you to understand that the word is interesting, but in every day speech: "Intresting", "in-tre-sting". "In-ter-est-ing", I have four syllables, when I actually say it naturally, it becomes three syllables and the "t" and the "r" become like a "ch", but that's... We'll talk about that next. Another word: "every". "E-vry". I don't say: "Ev-er-y", I don't say this letter "e", "ev-er-y". "E-vry", "evryone", "evrything", "evry".

Learn English: 3 easy ways to get better at speaking English

Published on Sun, 17 Jun 2018 16:27:44

There are easy ways to learn English, and here are 3 methods NOT taught in language schools or textbooks. These methods are fun, fast, and easy to learn! You will learn how to make studying English easier, and learn how to spend less time studying. Take this lesson and learn the secrets to getting better in English right now. "The Prosperity Plan." It's empty. Why? Well, hi. James, from EngVid. I have a book, and it says "Prosperity Plan". I know you're here to learn English. This is a book full of secrets on how to make millions of dollars. Empty. That's because when people tell you there's a secret, there's not really a secret; there's a method behind something, and you may not know it, so to you it's a secret, but you know, just like that book, there are no secrets. The only one is hard work. Let's look at the three methods I have for you today in order to learn English, okay? Call them the "Secrets you need to know" because most people don't know them because the funny thing is, although they're not secret -- I said it again -- they're not methods that are usually taught in ESL books. The Kaizen Method, the Process Method, and the Writing Method are actually books I read on something completely different. But what I found was they were very, very handy for learning English. Personally, I'm trying to learn Spanish, and when I apply these different methods, I found my learning going faster and faster, and I actually enjoyed it. So I called them "secret" for you because I'm quite sure that your teachers haven't sat down and gone, "Today, we're going to learn the Kaizen Method of English. Then, we'll do the Process Method, and then we'll do the Writing Method." No. Because they're actually three different books, all right? So I'm just going to give you a part of each book, and if I come across to the end, I'll give you another lesson on it, all right? But these are three things I liked out of these books. All right. Let's start from the first one, the Process Method. I know -- and it's in red, and I start here why? Most of the times people are learning a language, they want to -- and this is what the Process Method is about. People start with "product", "product". What is a "product"? A "product" is something you can touch or hold. This marker is a product. But this isn't how the marker started. I'm sorry. Okay, the marker started a little differently. I mean, that's an alcohol base that I'm sniffing. When I go [inhales], there's liquid in here. This is plastic -- came from oil. So why I'm telling you all these things -- you're going, "Why are you telling me?" Well, things start in a certain way, but they end up like this. In fact, you can think of the Process Method versus product as being a tree and being a seed. And a seed, you know, little thing, you put it in the ground, and it grows into a tree. Well, when you have a seed, the seed has no idea that it's going to be a tree and a big tree -- how long it will take. But humans are funny. They want to start a language, and they think right away, "I'm going to learn English." And then, they sit down; they open the book; they open the book; "I'm going to learn English. I'm learning English. I'm learning English." And then they get upset one hour later. "I don't know any English. I don't speak English." Well, it's like being a human. You start as a baby, you grow to an adult. When we talk about the Process Method, what you want to do is don't think about you want to speak English. Yes, I know. That's why you're watching this video and why you're studying. Think more about what you're doing while you're studying English. And this is called the "process". Go into the step. Concentrate on what you're doing. You'll find a couple of things happen: Sometimes you'll say English is hard or it's boring. If you do this method, you'll actually stop finding it hard or boring, and you'll enjoy it because you'll be working on something specific, mastering that, and then you're going to start noticing that the final product -- English -- is coming to you. And it will come faster than you think. Why? Well, if you're thinking, "I don't understand this English", you're focusing, really, on you don't understand English or you don't know English. You're not focusing on what you're doing. If you take a breath [inhales] and go [exhales], "Okay. I'm just watching this video of this crazy guy who speaks very quickly in English, and just now, he told me to take a breath. Oh, okay. I understand." And you're ahead. That's the Process Method. Take time to actually go back -- when you're thinking about it's hard; it's difficult or boring -- and say to yourself, "What am I doing now?" And then look at that. Each time you do that, you get further in the process and you will end up with a product before you know it. Okay? Sounds simple, but try it. You can even do this on a date. That's another story.

1 Simple Trick to Become Fluent in English - the JAM Technique - How to Be a Confident Speaker

Published on Tue, 12 Jun 2018 10:29:31

Learn how to become a FLUENT and CONFIDENT English speaker by spending just 10 minutes a day. This is the JAM technique. For more FREE English lessons, SUBSCRIBE to this channel. Transcript: Hi and welcome back. In this video, I’m going to teach you one simple trick that you can use to become a fluent English speaker by spending just 10 minutes a day. The best part about this is that you don’t need a partner – you can do this by yourself. This is a technique that has worked for many of my students and if you do what I tell you in this video, I guarantee that you will become more fluent in English. So what is this trick? Well, it’s a technique known as JAM. Uh, no, not that kind of jam. This is actually a little fluency game based on a show that airs on BBC radio. The reason it’s called JAM is because it’s short for Just A Minute. This game has three stages. So here’s how you play it: You’re going to talk about a topic for one minute. That is, you’re going to give a speech without any preparation. So you just pick a topic - you can either take general topics like sports, hobbies, friends, books etc. or you can choose a question. For example, what is your favorite mode of transport? And once you have a topic, you speak. Now when you do, there are some rules: The first rule is that you cannot stop speaking. You must talk for the full minute. If you have to pause to catch your breath, it’s OK, but you cannot pause for more than three seconds. Even if you say nonsense or you say something unrelated to the topic it doesn’t matter. You’re just going to keep talking. So that’s rule number one. Rule number two is you cannot repeat the same ideas. That means you can’t just say the same things over and over and over again – this isn’t pronunciation practice – it’s fluency development, so no repetition of the same ideas. And rule number three is no writing – you cannot make any notes while you are speaking, you must only concentrate on speaking. These are just the three rules. So to begin, you need a timer, this can be on your smartphone for example. You start stage one by starting the timer and you speak until the one minute is reached. I’m going to give you an example of how to do this. I’m going to take this question: “What is your favorite mode of transport?” and I’m going to speak for a minute on this topic. Now I haven’t done any preparation, so let’s see how I do. OK, so what’s my favorite mode of transport? I would have to say that it’s the train. That’s because um, actually, you get to see a lot of nice scenery, beautiful landscapes and things like that. And you know, train journeys generally tend to be longer than other types of, or rather, other modes of transport. You can see I’m really struggling for ideas but I can’t stop, I have to keep going so I’m saying whatever comes to mind, that’s no problem. But back to the topic at hand, yeah, train journeys because they’re longer, they’re more relaxing. And one last thing I want to mention is that I’ve had the opportunity to meet interesting people and make friends on many train journeys. As a kid I used to ride the train a lot with my family. We used to go to lots of places by train and it’s actually something that I really enjoyed. Phew! That was hard. But that’s OK. That’s the whole point of this exercise. That was stage one. Now we’re going to move on to stage two. Here’s where we’re really going to start building our fluency. The first part of stage two is making notes – so you can use a paper and pen now. And you’re going to think back to the speech that you just gave, and collect ideas you came up with. In my speech, I remember that I had three ideas: The first was that on train journeys, you get to see a lot of beautiful scenery. The second idea was that train journeys are longer, so they’re more relaxing. The third idea was that you get to meet interesting people and make friends. So once you have these ideas down, you’re going to repeat the exercise. That means, you’re going to set your timer for one minute and you’re going to speak again on the same topic, but now, you can use your notes to guide you. You will notice that this time, you are actually able to speak more fluently because you have some good ideas on paper, and you will be able to expand on your ideas and give more information. Once the timer hits one minute, you stop. And we move on to stage three. Just like in stage two, you’re going to go to paper and pen, but this time, you’re going to add more ideas to your notes based on your second speech. I added some ideas like this. So now – for one final time, you’re going to speak again. This is your final speech. So you set your timer for one minute, you use your notes and speak. I’m going to give you my final speech based on my notes so you can see the difference.
